Styling 101: Expert Haircare How-To’s & Styling Advice
Style SOS: How often should I wash my curly hair?
We get asked this question a lot, and it is an important one. When it comes to waves and spirals, easy styling starts with how you cleanse.
Choosing the best shampoo for curly hair is essential. But before we get to what shampoo to use for curls, we should talk first about how often you are shampooing.
Curls tend to be dry, and are often more porous and susceptible to breakage. Naturally, you may want to shampoo a little less. “Less” does not mean never, however. Master Stylist Stevie Lyons puts it this way:
“A lot of women with curly hair just want to rinse the hair. They end up with scalp build up which can turn into other issues – like waxy dandruff, or product buildup that looks like cradle cap. You can even experience more hair shedding because you are suffocating the follicle.”
– Stevie Lyons, Master Stylist
The most important takeaway from this is that shampooing does not equal over-shampooing. Generally 1-3 times/week is the sweet spot. If you have curly hair, however, it is extra important to wash with a gentle, hydrating shampoo, and always condition to get the cuticle closed and keep the scalp healthy.
Also, you want to confirm that a few things are not in your shampoo. Like parabens and aggressive sudsers like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (also known as SLS and SLES or simply “sulfates”). As part of our commitment to clear beauty, SEVEN® haircare products are all paraben and sulfate (SLS/SLES) free. You can get the skinny about sulfates and your hair here, or read below to determine the perfect shampoo for your hair type.
